Frequently asked questions about VisionSafe Eye Checks

We’ve filmed ourselves answering questions about the VisionSafe Eye Check so you can be informed when you book one. Click on any of the videos below to watch it or click through to read the transcript.

How long will a Vision Safe Eye Check take?

It will depend on the presenting problem. It can take anything from 30 to 45 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes to conduct and complete the different types of VisionSafe Eye Checks. The Glaucoma Safe assessment takes longer than the Macular Safe assessment since there are more tests.

Will a VisionSafe Eye Check affect my vision? i.e. Can I drive to my assessment?

A VisionSafe Eye Check will not normally affect your vision. However sometimes, your clinician may want to dilate your pupils to conduct a more detailed examination of the inside of your eye, and then your vision may be a bit blurred for a few hours by the dilating drops. It is generally best to assume this for at least your initial assessment and not drive to your appointment.

What is the difference between seeing my optometrist and a VisionSafe Eye Check?

A VisionSafe Eye Check goes far beyond a typical eye examination with your local optometrist. A VisionSafe Eye Check is designed to coexist and complement a typical sight test and/or the spectacle or contact lens assessments you might already be undergoing with your local optometrist. When you undertake a VisionSafe Eye Check with Lydia Chang or Praveen Patel, their expertise and experience in the subjects they specialise in will enable them to answer your questions and concerns comprehensively. They will also be able to provide you with a customised treatment plan (if needed) to optimise your visual health and outcomes.

Do I need a referral for a VisionSafe Eye Check?

You don’t need a referral for a VisionSafe Eye Check. However, if you are insured and for instance, you desire a second opinion about an eye condition which you are receiving treatment for, then you should check whether you need a referral letter from your GP or your local optometrist. It is always best to check with your insurance company for authorization before making an appointment. A referral letter from your GP or local optometrist can be helpful though since it enables us to determine which VisionSafe Eye Check you would most benefit from. Also, we like to write back to your GP and community optometrist (with your permission) so that they are kept in the loop.

Do I need to bring anything to a VisionSafe Eye Check?

Please bring the following:

  • A list of any medications you are taking
  • Your prescription for glasses or contact lenses
  • Your authorisation number if you are insured
